Abstract |

English Abstract: | The introduction of non-native tree species, which are better adapted to future environmental conditions, is a possible adaptation measure under climate change. The Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii [Mirbel] Franco) is considered as a possible alternative tree species in European forests due to its high productivity, good wood quality and its tolerance against drought. The aim of this study was to investigate the suitability of Douglas-fir in Central Europe under climate change conditions. The focus was on a case study region in Austria and Germany. Multivariate Universal Response Functions (URFs) for Douglas-fir populations were developed to predict growth performance as a function of climate of planting location in Europe (environmental influences) and climate of population origin in North America (genetic influences). Data from 50 provenance trials located along a broad climatic gradient in Austria and Germany were used to develop the URFs Model comparison revealed that the best performing populations of Douglas-fir identified the URFs were from significantly different origin and had superior growth performance than those identified by the climate envelope approach. Model validation with independent data provided better results in Central and South Eastern Europe compared to Atlantic and maritime Western Europe. The cumulative uncertainty of the model varied widely depending on the planting regions in Europe and the climate change scenario analyzed. The URFs identified populations originating western cascades and coastal regions of British Columbia, Washington and Oregon to be suitable for central Europe under both current climate and climate change. Overall the study came up with a flexible decision making tool that can be used to, identify suitable populations, planting site as well as a species distribution model.
