English Abstract: | Forest landscapes supply a multitude of ecosystem services to humans and are often required to fulfil several different services simultaneously. Climate change is predicted to have severe, mostly negative impacts on forest ecosystem services provisioning. Forest management is thus challenged to ensure a stable provisioning of ecosystem services under changing environmental conditions while also meeting the increasing societal demands on forests. There is still considerable uncertainty regarding the utility of different management approaches in addressing these challenges. Using the individual-based forest landscape and disturbance model (iLand) I investigated the effects of four contrasting management strategies on the ecosystem services timber production, carbon storage, site protection, and biodiversity conservation on a forest landscape in the Northern Front Range of the Alps in Austria. iLand includes processes from the individual tree to the landscape scale, and dynamically simulates interactions between vegetation, climate and disturbances. Each management strategy was projected under seven different climate scenarios over 200 years. I analysed the performance of the management strategies under historic baseline conditions, and subsequently assessed the stability of ecosystem service provisioning under climate change. Ecosystem services showed a highly variable reaction to climate change. Timber production and climate regulation were generally negatively impacted, while site protection showed only small responses and biodiversity was clearly positively affected. No management strategy was found to be superior in providing all the services investigated. However strategies actively adapting to climate change via reducing the rotation period and fostering tree species better adapted to warming conditions generally showed a more robust provisioning of ecosystem services under changing conditions.
