| Abstract in Englisch: | Footpaths and pavements imply and represent manifold uses. Living, work at home or at the workplace and, thus, life and human activities in general are organised by means of footpaths. This dissertation is based on the assumption that the material and morphological design and construction of footpaths is an expression of the general quality of open spaces and of the craftsmanship applied to them. The author aims at describing traditional cobbling or paving methods for open spaces that are suitable for human use and at providing a link between issues of the research and practice of landscape construction and landscape planning.
The paradigm of factual evidence is followed by an analysis of the material construction and quality of footpaths, complemented by examples taken from other European cities. The ¿silent¿ witnesses reveal the principles inherent in them and their significance for open-space planning and the construction of footpaths.
The typological section describes the MATERIALS, the CONSTRUCTION and STATE of footpaths in Vienna. In the 19th century, Vienna was famous for its pavements and surfaces. The analysis indicates that the City of Vienna has failed to maintain these surfaces in a sustainable way. Instead of a quality-oriented development, the city saw a series of comprehensive modifications of its pavements. The material re-construction of pavements was followed by morphological re-design. This situation has a negative bearing on craftsmanship, on maintenance and the use of open spaces.
In a section devoted to an encyclopaedic typology of SURFACES the author examines the development of construction principles, their economic and socio-historical significance. The passage from hand-crafted paving to technological and industrial construction methods illustrates both a waste of natural resources and a loss of skills and workmanship. In a parallel process, urban ¿floors¿ are functionalised, are the object of public administration, reduction and specialisation.
The quality of open spaces is determined by the quality of their construction. A typology of the different ZONES demonstrates that the construction-related requirements for footpaths may also serve to provide an important classification scheme for manifold uses, provided they are adequately integrated in the planning process. A professional interaction of sconstruction skills and open-space planning will lead to open spaces that are fit for use and flexibly adapted to the special requirements of the respective site.
