Abstract |
Abstract in Englisch: | Non-industrial private landowners (NIPFLs) hold about two-thirds of the forest area in North America. Therefore they represent an important group concerning the future supplies of timber products. However, most of the private landowners hold their forests primarily for other reasons than timber harvesting. One means to overcome the manifold problems NIPF landowners have to face, is by acting through a cooperative business entity. The cooperative as a unique business form was studied with respect to a forest cooperative in southern Wisconsin, the Sustainable Woods Cooperative (SWC). Although the SWC quit business in March 2003, it serves as a model for people interested in building a cooperative by showing which mistakes to avoid and what approaches can lead to success. |
